ADMISSION
REQUIREMENTS FOR A MASTER DEGREE WITHOUT THESIS PROGRAMME
Candidates should have a Bachelor
degree from a university recognized by the Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Candidates should have obtained a cumulative grade point average
(CGPA) of not less than 2.75 or equivalent. OR
A candidate with a CGPA of 2.75
but not less than 2.50 or equivalent can be considered if they have
3 years of related working experience after having obtained a Bachelor
degree. OR
A candidate with a CGPA of 2.50
but not less than 2.25 or equivalent can be considered if they have
5 years of related working experience after having obtained a Bachelor
degree. OR
A candidate with a CGPA of less
than 2.25 or equivalent can be considered if they have 10 years
of related working experience after having obtained a Bachelor degree.
Candidates applying for Master
degrees in Guidance & Counselling and Teaching of English as
a Second Language must pass an interview conducted by the Faculty.

FOR A PhD DEGREE PROGRAMME
Candidates should have a Master
degree from a university recognized by the Universiti Putra Malaysia.
AND
Candidates applying for a Ph.D.
Programmes at the Faculty of Educational Studies must pass an interview
conducted by the Faculty.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
OF A MASTER DEGREE
A candidate for a Master degree
may pursue the degree through either the thesis (Master of Science)
or non-thesis (Master of Education) option. The thesis option is
mainly for students wishing to develop analytical research skills
before pursuing professional careers or entering doctoral programmes.
The non-thesis option is mainly for students wishing to advance
professional careers through a more applied master's degree.
The Master of Science (M. S.)
plan of study requires a student to complete between 9-18 semester
hours of coursework (depending on the recommendations of the supervisory
committee and approved by the Graduate Study Committee of the Faculty)
and a thesis. A plan of study for a M. S. student is determined
by the student’s thesis supervisory committee. The types of
course may vary from one student to another depending on the student’s
preparation at the undergraduate level. All M. S. students must
register for a seminar course (EDU 5998), and an M. S. Research
(SPS 5999). At the end of the program of study, all M. S. students
must submit a thesis for examination.
The Master of Education (M.
Ed.) and Master of Human Resource Development (M. HRD.) plan of
study requires 36 semester hours of coursework, of which 24 semester
hours are compulsory courses and 12 semester hours are elective
courses. For a M. Ed. degree in Guidance and Counselling, a student
is required to complete a total of 48 semester hours of coursework.
The plan of study for an M. Ed. student is determined by the student’s
academic advisor. Each student in the M. Ed. and M. HRD. programmes
must sit and pass a comprehensive examination after completing all
the courses specified in the programme of study.
Master of Science
Degree Requirements
The Master of Science degree is conferred to graduate students who
have met the following requirements:
1. Maintain a cumulative GPA
of 3.00.
2. Successfully complete all courses (9-18 credits) as specified
by the student's thesis supervisory committee within the time specified
by the Graduate School.
3. Submit a thesis for examination.
4. Pass a final examination (viva voce) conducted by an examination
committee to be appointed by the UPM Graduate Studies Committee.
Master of Education
and Master of Human Resource Degree Requirements
The Master of Education and Master of Human Resource Development
degrees are conferred to graduate students who have met the following
requirements:
1. Maintain a cumulative GPA
of 3.00.
2. Successfully complete all courses (36 credits) as specified by
the student's academic advisors within the time specified by the
Graduate School Office.
3. For a M. Ed. in Guidance and Counselling, a student must complete
48 credits hours of coursework and an internship.
4. Pass a comprehensive examination at the end of the programme.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
OF A PhD DEGREE
Doctoral students are expected
to complete between 12 and 36 semester hours of coursework (depending
on the recommendations of the supervisory committee and approved
by the Graduate Study Committee of the Faculty) beyond the Master
degree. The plan of study for Ph. D. students is determined by the
student’s thesis supervisory committee. Each candidate for
the Ph.D. degree must pass a comprehensive examination at the Ph.D.
level no later than the third semester. All Ph. D. students must
register for two seminar courses, SPS 6903 and EDU 5998, and a Ph.
D. Research (SPS 6999). All Ph. D. students must submit a thesis
for examination at the end of the study.
Doctoral Degree
Requirements
The doctoral degree is conferred to graduate students who have met
the following requirements:
1. Successfully complete all
courses (12-36 credits) as specified by the student's thesis supervisory
committee within the time specified by the Graduate School.
2. Pass a comprehensive or qualifying examination and successfully
defend his/he thesis proposal
3. Submit a thesis for examination.
4. Pass a final examination (viva voce) conducted by an examination
committee to be appointed by the UPM Graduate Studies Committee.
5. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
6. A Ph. D. student in Guidance and Counselling must successfully
complete an internship.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Master of Science
i. Thesis Requirement
SPS 5999 Master’s Research
All Master of Science students are required to register for SPSS
5999. This is a master’s research course whereby at the end
of the programme a student has to submit a thesis based on the research
conducted. The thesis will be examined and a viva voce conducted
to determine the student’s competency in the field of study.
ii. Seminar
SPS 5903
Seminar
All students must register
and pass a graduate seminar course, SPS 5903.
iii. Presentation
of Research Findings
Before submitting
a Master’s thesis for examination, a student must present
his/her research findings in a seminar to be organized by the faculty.
Doctor of Philosophy
i. Thesis
SPS 6999
Doctor of Philosophy Research
All Ph. D. students must
register for SPS 6999 (Doctoral Research). At the end of their graduate
programmes, students must submit a Doctor of Philosophy thesis for
examination.
ii. SPS 6903 (Seminar-
Ph. D. Proposal Presentation)
Prior to
conducting a doctoral research and after having passed the comprehensive
examination, a student must present a Ph. D. research proposal at
the faculty level for approval from the Faculty Graduate Study Committee.
A Ph. D. student must register for SPS 6903 no later than by the
third semester in order to present his or her Ph. D. research proposal.
This course will be graded S/US.
iii. Comprehensive/Qualifying
Examination
A Ph. D
student must pass a written and oral comprehensive examination.
The examination is taken once the student has completed all courses
as specified in the programmes of study. A student is permitted
to sit for the comprehensive examination not more than two times.
iv. Presentation
of Ph. D. Research Findings
Before submitting
a Ph. D. thesis for examination, a student must present his/her
research findings in a seminar to be organized by the faculty.
LENGTH OF STUDY
Master’s Degree
Programme
A Master
degree program is to be completed within a minimum period of one
year and a maximum period of three years.
Doctoral Degree
programme
A Ph. D.
degree program is to be completed within a minimum period of two
years and a maximum period of five years.
