BACKGROUND

The Department of Sports Studies began operations on 1 May,2004. This department was first manifested as the Physical Education Unit under the auspices of the Education Department (1979 – 2002) and later as the Department of Human Behaviour and Movement (June 2002 – April 2004). This department is the standard bearer for learning, research and teaching in the disciplines of Physical Education, Health Education and Sports Science in Malaysia. The objectives of the Department of Sports Science are to achieve the vision of receiving international recognition as the foremost academic and reference centre in physical movement education, sport science and physical education based on a science and technology approach.

TEACHING

Graduate programmes
This department offers the following programmes at graduate level:
PhD – Physical education and Sports Science
MSc/Med - Physical Education and Sports Science

The PhD programme requires students to take course work and complete a dissertation. The Master’s programme is a 36 credit hour programme that is offered via coursework and a thesis (MSc) or coursework and a comprehensive exam/project paper (Med). Acceptance into the programme is competitive and candidates need to demonstrate the ability to conduct graduate level work.

The Bachelor of Education Programme.
This 4 year (135 credit hour) programme produces graduates who are certified to teach in the Malaysian school system.

RESEARCH

Research represents a major activity in the department. The specific fields in which research are conducted include Physical Education, health education, fitness, testing and evaluation in physical education, motor performance, sport psychology, sport management, and physical training, exercise physiology and sport dietatics.

CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION SERVICES

The department of sports science has formed cooperative networks with local and international learning institutions. Among these institutions include the ministry of education, the ministry of higher education, the ministry of youth and sports, the national sports council, the national sports institute, and relevant non governmental agencies.

ACADEMIC STAFF

The Department has 10 academic staff qualified and experienced in the areas of Physical Education & Sports Science.
