The Department of Counsellor Education and Counselling Psychology (DCECP) is one of the six departments in the Faculty of Educational Studies. It was established as a Unit of Guidance and Counselling in the Department of Education (1979-2002). In the following years (Jun 2002-April 2004), the Unit was under the Department of Behavioural and Human Development. On May 1st, 2004 the Unit was raised to the status of a department under the Faculty of Educational Studies. The department strives toward excellence in teaching, research, consultation and extension in guidance and counselling. The Bachelor of Education (Guidance and Counselling) was a pioneering programme in Malaysia offered by the faculty since 1981.
This department has three main functions:
Both graduate and undergraduate programmes were offered by the DCECP.
The programmes offered are:
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
The Ph.D. programme offers various specializations such as counsellor education and counselling supervision, family counselling, career counselling, school counselling, drug abused counselling, cross-cultural counselling, group counselling. Students are required to complete the coursework and dissertation for the Ph. D. programme. The coursework assissts the students in mastering the knowledge of their specialization areas.
Master of Science (M .Sc.)
Students in this programme are required to enrol for coursework and completes thesis.
Master of Education (M.Ed.)
Students in this programme are required to enrol for coursework and complete comprehensive examination.
Bachelor of Education (Guidance and Counselling)
The Bachelor of Education (Guidance and Counselling) prepares students with the current knowledge and skills for various counselling needs.
The programmes offered by the DCECP met the standards of the Board of Counsellors. Graduates of these programmes are eligible as a registered counsellor and as a counsellor practitioner in Malaysia.
As one of the main activities of the department, research by the academic staff covers a broad spectrum of knowledge in the counselling areas sych as: counsellor education, counsellor supervision, family counselling, parental consultation counselling, career counselling, school counselling, drug abused counselling, cross-cultural counselling, career and organizational counselling, technologies in guidance and counselling services, testing and measurement in counselling, theoretical research and Islamic spirituality counselling.
CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION SERVICES
The department is actively involved in consultation and extension services for various agencies, such as the Ministry of Education, Malaysian Public Services Department, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Board of Counsellors, the National Drug Agency, the Malaysian Counsellor Association and the Malaysian Social Institute.
The Community Counselling Clinic at the department provides counselling services for the students and staff of Universiti Putra Malaysia and the adjacent community.
TEACHING AND LEARNING FACILITIES
The DCECP has a strong teaching and learning facilities. The individual counselling, group, family, and testing and measurement laboratories are equiped with state of the art equiptment to facilitate teaching and learning.
The department is staffed by prominent scholars who are in the various fields of counselling specialization.
